About Us
The Maharashtra Association of Minority Educational Institutions was established on July 14, 1995. The Society is registered under the Societies is registered under the Societies Registration Act, 1860 with Charitable objects and the Bombay Public Trust Act 1950 and the Registered No. is F18042 (BOM) with its registered office at Principal, Jitendra Chauhan College of Law, Vile Parle West, Bombay 400 056.
The Seven founder trustees were Shri Chandrakant Shanghvi, President, Shri Abdul Sattar Abdul Majid Zariwala as Hon. Secretary, Prin. Dr. Theodore Masaya Joseph as Treasurer, Shri Purshottam Mavji Kavadia, Prin. Qurban Husein Ahsan Husein Saeed, Shri V Shankar, and Shri Girdharilal Purshottamlal Jhunjhunwala as members representing Shri Vile Parle Kelavani Mandal, Anjuman-I_Islam, Wilson College, Somaiya Vidyavihar, Burhani College, SIES, and Hindi Vidya Prachar Samiti respectively.
In 1999, Joint Director, Higher Education, Government of Maharashtra issued G.R. with instructed that every College is required to absorb Surplus Staff against the vacant post.
This GR rejuvenated the office bearers of the Association and brought forth the fighting spirit of the Association in protecting its rights.
The G.R. was challenged in the Hon’ble High Court of Mumbai led by the Late Shri Balwantbhai Sheth of Shri Vile Parle Kelavani Mandal as President, Prof. Asgar E. Lakdawala as Hon. Secretary, Principal of Royal College of Arts, Science and Commerce and Fr. Joe Dias Principal of St. Xavier’s College. The fight by these members ensured that the MinorityAssociation win the case and the G.R. was stayed by the High Court for implementation to Institutions recognized as Minority Institutions.
The Objects of the association are:
- To supply information about the rights vested by the Constitution of India to the linguistic and religious minorities for establishing and administering educational institutions.
- To collect information about the difficulties faced by various Minority Educational Institutions and give them advice and assistance at a reasonable charge and to find out ways and means to overcome such difficulties and to approach Government and other authorities to redress their grievances, on their behalf.
- To collect information from various sources and to compile and publish the same for the betterment and proper administration of the Minority Educational Institutions,
- To guide the Member-Institution on the establishment of new schools/colleges or different branches of educational institutions.
- To arrange conferences, meetings, etc., of the Minority Educational Institutions run by linguistic and religious minorities to discuss and resolve problems faced by them
- To work for betterment and expansion of the educational activities of Minority Educational Institutions
- To maintain the library and data collection center for the use of the Minority Educational Institutions and make available the literature, books, Government Orders and Court Decisions, whichever are applicable, in respect of rights guaranteed to the Minority Educational Institutions,
- To protect, promote, and safeguard the interest and rights of the Minority Educational Institutions.
- To co-operate, assist, and co-ordinate with other Associations having the same or similar objects.
- To establish a free library for poor and deserving students.
Over its illustrious journey of 25 glorious years, the associations under the able leadership and guidance of eminent educationists like Late Shri Balwanthbhai Sheth, Prin. Dr. Ajit Singh, Prin. M K Desai, Prin. Dr. Richard Heradia, Prin. Ft. Joe Fraizer, Prin. Dr. Madhav Welling, Prin. Dr. A E Lakdawala, Prin. and others have ensured that the association works towards the objects as laid in the MoA. The Office Bearers and members of the Association have ensured that the rights of the Minority Institutions as specified in the Constitution of India are protected and have filed and fought cases even in the Supreme Court of India and have successfully defended and protected the rights of the Minority ensuring the responsibilities towards the society is executed. The latest in the victory is ensuring that the Constitutional Reservation Quota is not made applicable to admissions to Degree as well as Junior College.
Some issues are still awaiting the order by the Bombay High Court whereas to resolve some issues like permission to surrender the vacant seats against Minority Quota after the third round is completed in online admissions to FYJC, Formation of the Selection Committee for promotion of teaching staff in Degree College under CAS, etc. we are in process of consulting our lawyers to approach the Hon’ble courts and seek redressal to our issues and protect our rights.
